When a Home Needs a Sump Pump

Many houses have weeping tile around the footing that collects groundwater. That water has to go somewhere. A sump pit gives it a low point to collect, and the pump lifts it out and away from the foundation.

A new pump may be needed if your basement takes on water during heavy rain, if an interior drainage system is being installed, or if the existing pump is old, noisy, cycling constantly or rusted.

Our Sump Pump Services

  • New sump pit installation, including cutting the floor and setting a sealed liner.
  • Replacement of failed or ageing pumps.
  • Check valves to stop pumped water from flowing back into the pit.
  • Backup options, such as a battery backup pump, for power outages.
  • Discharge lines routed so water drains away from the house.
  • Sealed, airtight lids that reduce humidity and odours in the basement.

Choosing the Right Pump

Submersible and pedestal pumps

Submersible pumps sit inside the pit and run quietly under a lid. Pedestal pumps keep the motor above the pit, which makes them easier to reach but louder. We recommend a type based on your pit size, the volume of water and how the space is used.

Backup power

Severe storms that bring heavy rain can also bring power outages, which is exactly when a pump is needed most. A battery backup pump can keep water moving for a period when the main pump loses power or fails. We explain the options and their limits honestly.

The Installation Process

  1. Assess where water collects and where the pit should go.
  2. Prepare the floor and excavate for the pit and liner.
  3. Connect any interior drainage to the pit.
  4. Install the pump, check valve and discharge piping.
  5. Test the system by filling the pit and watching a full cycle.

Where the Water Goes

Discharge should flow well away from the foundation so the same water does not soak back into the soil and return to the pit. Lines that run outside can freeze in winter, so the route and outlet need planning. Many municipalities also set rules on where sump water may be discharged, so we follow local requirements.

Looking After Your Pump

Test the pump in spring and fall by pouring a bucket of water into the pit. Listen for unusual noise, check that the float moves freely and confirm water leaves the discharge outlet. If your pit fills often even in dry weather, read about wet basement repair or basement waterproofing, since frequent cycling can point to a larger drainage issue.
